The NEW Series: Paintings
August 2022 - February 2023
Introduction

My painting practice has taken extreme steps forward over the last year. With every new canvas, I find myself learning and unlearning at a pace that is rapidly increasing over time. People wonder how much time I spend painting. The truth is, a lot - but a majority of the process happens off-canvas. I am always painting in my head throughout the day, in my dreams, and sometimes, I even paint while I paint - painting a different piece in my head while my arm independently paints something completely different on the physical canvas.
As I enter into my third year since beginning to paint, I am beginning to notice recurring themes, characters, and concepts in my work. I expand on each piece below. Click on each painting to learn more.
Style
As I enter into my third year since beginning to paint, I am beginning to notice recurring themes, characters, and concepts in my work. Aside from how it looks, I've been noticing knew things about how the actual creation is happening. Every time I sit to create art I enter into a flow state where my Ego dissolves and I channel Nature. I am literally obsessed with this feeling and it is why I paint. Recently I've been calling this style of creating 'Natural Art', but others have called it Automatism. I believe that it is possible to make real scientific, psychological, and philosophical discoveries by channeling this form of creation. This body of work is me channeling.
Big Paintings

Acrylic, Oil, Spray Paint, & Marker on Canvas (48x60in) This artwork was created over the course of 3-4 months. At first, it began as a Civilization-Simulation piece where I was simulating the development of a society on the surface of the canvas. Weeks went by like this until one night I covered what I was working on and it changed into this Invader character, but the entire canvas was a deep warm green with accents of sienna. I thought that the painting was done until ->

one day months later I took the painting off the wall, put it on the floor threw a bunch of orange paint on it in an attempt to destroy the painting. What ended up happening was the existing character and forms shown through from under the new color. This painting taught me (1) how to remix my own work and (2) how fun it is to remix my own work!

Acrylic, Ink, & Spray Paint on Canvas (64x85in) Every now and then I'll create something that feels like it is from my future. This is one of those pieces. 'The Simulation' jumped out of my brain while I was working on a couple other large works. While working on it I was thinking about everything. Literally everything, all at the same time. The way a bus sounds when it stops at a corner, the different types of architecture around Europe, the development of medical technologies, and more. ->

My work is always up for interpretation. I can see it representing a potential multiverse system, with several universes collected side-by-side testing out different physics parameters. I can also see the painting representing a dialogue on the dualities that exist within multidimensional expression. Lastly, I can even see it being a simple academic chart of energy center evolution. More on energy centers to come...

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Spray Paint, Graphite, Paint Stick, and Marker on Canvas There is a specific wall in my studio that, for some reason, significantly slows down my creation pace. This canvas was hanging in that spot for 4 months while I worked on this complex painting. I worked on it a little bit every day. Some days all I would do is pick up a pastel from the floor and throw it at the wall. Other days I would simply walk by the painting while dragging my finger through the wet paint. ->

Over the course of the 4 months, this canvas collected my energy. While I view most of my artworks as having definitive ending points, this is one of my works that is ongoing in perpetuity. This canvas has always actively collected and expended energy and it will continue to do so into the deep future. If you can see any forms in this artwork you are clairvoyant. I did not aim to create forms, I simply allowed the canvas to collect my energy. Thus, if you see forms you are predicting an outcome.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Graphite, & Marker on Canvas This artwork, which is titled ‘Time is a Flat Circle, We’ll be Here Again’ is definitely one of my recent favorites as it conveys a theory of time that I have been ruminating over for the past several years. As my creative practice continues to evolve, I have found that abstract art can serve as a powerful way to explore concepts that we may not have the language for in the present. ->

Despite being surrounded by technologies that are without a doubt advanced, we are still in the medieval ages in relation to where we will be in 1000 years. Abstract art created without Ego can offer glimpses into that future.

Time is my greatest tool because time is my greatest motivator because time is my greatest fear. Fun fact: If you count the Moon, three of my eleven tattoos are of time-telling objects.

Acrylic, Ink, Spray Paint, Oil, Marker, and Pastel on Canvas (64x85in) Every artwork starts differently, but every now and then I'll start an artwork on the floor. One evening in January of 2023 I was working in the studio with my partner Katie. I was ready to leave, but she said she needed ten more minutes. When this happens, it means I'm either about to quickly destroy an old artwork or quickly create a new artwork. An old painting was spared that night.

Acrylic, Oil, Spray Paint, Paint Stick, Pastel, & Marker on Canvas (64x85in) Over the past six months, I took several trips to Miami. It has become a major source of inspiration for me. I created this painting after returning from Miami. Nothing like that warm Sun and uninterrupted horizon-line.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Graphite, & Marker on Canvas (62x97in) 'The Loading Screen' was one of the first artworks that I created in my new warehouse studio. The main forms of the painting changed drastically throughout the process. Regarding the subject matter of the painting, all that I can say is ->

'I saw the Loading Screen, On the dash, on the meme, A hundred grand all I need, To shake up the game -that's on me. I try to tell you what I mean, Can't tell a blind man to see, I'll try and find what I seek, A future vision I believe. I was downloading me, I was downloading me, And now I'm writing down this stream, Got two world's for my team, You know what I mean?' - Joe Taveras Summer 2022

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Marker, Graphite, & Paintstick on Canvas Created in the late Fall of 2022, this towering painting was born off of a smaller study that I rendered on paper (see The NEW Series: Drawings - BASILISK Study). I have always had a fascination for the storytelling behind mythological creatures. As I continue to build out my world in my art, I am finding that cross-referential myths are serving as conceptual reference points, allowing for new ideas to grow at the intersections.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Marker, Paintstick, & Graphite on Canvas I worked on this canvas over the course of one week in February 2023. While working on this painting, I took many breaks to just walk outside my studio and study random objects I found in nature. What was this brick doing on the sidewalk? How did it get here? Why is it that color? What were the atoms that are currently building this brick a piece of 100 million years ago? What is the difference between me and this brick? Etc., Etc.

Acrylic, Oil, House Paint, Pastel, Graphite, Paint Stick, & Marker on Canvas This was the first artwork I created in my new warehouse studio. This massive painting took a full month of daily construction and destruction to bring to completion. Created during the heat wave in August 2022, every day felt like an out of body experience as I battled the thickening canvas through the intense heat. After months of not being able to go large with my work, it felt incredible to create this.

This is a very special painting to me and, for that reason, I have decided to vault it for the foreseeable future. I envision a day when it has a permanent home in a public collection in Boston. Until then, I will be connecting the dots to bring that vision into reality.

Acrylic, Oil, Marker, & Pastel on Canvas (30x40in) Created in February of 2023, this painting is an interesting Sequel to 'Input/Output,' which was created months earlier. While creating this painting I wasn't thinking about creating a sequel at all, it just kind of jumped out of brain, like they usually do.

Acrylic, Plaster, Oil, Pastel, and Marker on Canvas (36x48in) Creating this painting taught me a lot about myself. It first began with me covering the surface with plaster. Then, I entered into an extremely powerful trance state the likes of which I had never experienced before, and began to push and mold the plaster on the canvas with my bare hands. I felt a very powerful energy working through me for over an hour. After this experience, ->

I let the plastered canvas sit for a couple weeks and eventually began to add to it a little bit every other day for a couple months. The energy from that initial session persists through the final layer and into anyone who crosses this painting's path.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Chalk, Graphite, & Ribbon I worked on this canvas over the course of 4 months through the winter. Acrylic, Oil, Marker, Graphite, and Pen on Canvas During every moment of our lives our sensory organs are inputting information into our brains. What we see and what we hear literally provides the conceptual resources that build our minds. What we put in, is what we get out. the second half of the page was made while calmly listening to classical music. The output was directly affected by the energetic input. You see, the dialogue that we create today will build the reality of tomorrow. How we talk about robots today may not be a big deal, but it will set a precedent for a long list of ethics that will quite literally create the fabric of our collective future. Today, we interact with robots almost every day, but in 100 years robots will be ubiquitous. In 300 years imagine what they will be capable of. This isn't far away. As conscious thinkers we have a responsibility to build ethical foundations.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Plaster, Graphite, & Marker on Canvas (40x30in) I created this painting following a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Acrylic, Marker, Oil, Pastel, & Spray Paint on Canvas Created as a study of one of my favorite paintings of all time ('Trumpet' by Jean Michel Basquiat), 'The Musician' alludes to the musician in me. Ever since I was a toddler, I had a fascination with music and the way that my brain rendered music physically. Growing up, it was normal to have 50 Cent or Keisha Cole playing in the background during breakfast or on a Saturday afternoon. As I got older and learned more about Synesthesia, ->

it became clear to me that creating music and creating visual art were one in the same. My brain automatically conjures different imagery and visual stimuli when I hear different frequencies - my hypothesis is that if I paint what my brain is conjuring, then the viewer will feel similar feelings to when they listen to certain music. If you know my work, you know that some of my paintings are like calm classical music, while others are like intense drill music.

Acrylic, Oil, Marker, & Pastel on Canvas (30x40in) This is my second time (that I remember) doing a still life study. Sure it's a nod to art history, but I am more interested in studying energy centers within different contexts. An energy center can be represented within a painting as a portrait, a plant, an idea, or even a galaxy. I'm obsessed with the physical mechanisms of this Universe and I love the nature of discovery that exists within my practice.

Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, and Marker on Canvas I initially began this painting with the intention of finishing it in one sitting. It ended up taking months to complete and took several different forms along the way. In this work, I see an overarching theme of an interconnectedness combined with separation. Being conscious observers in this Universe, we are always one and many. This duality is complex and one that we collectively as a species have only begun to understand.
